Mission Canyon

Mission Canyon is located just north of the downtown Santa Barbara and is also home to the highest peak in the Santa Ynez Mountains, La Cumbre Peak. It is a wooded hilly area beginning at the Old Mission and extending along Foothill Road, north and east into Mission Canyon Road and Las Canoas Road. A popular spot as an entry-point for weekend foothill hiking, it is one of the most rustically beautiful, yet fire-prone areas of Santa Barbara due to heavy natural vegetation. The views in this primarily residential region are spectacular. It is home to the Santa Barbara Mission. This spot was chosen by missionaries for its prime location on a rise of land situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez mountains. Visitors looking for a taste of history can schedule a tour of the Mission, known as "the queen of the missions" and built in 1786. Mission Canyon is bursting with great activities for every interest. From picnics at the Mission Rose Gardens, to a plethora of outstanding hiking opportunities, or a visit to the gorgeous Santa Barbara Botanic Garden or walking amongst the butterflies at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History there is something for everyone.
